Sketching, lineart (which was abandoned eventually, as you can see lmfao) and basic color/lighting blocking:

I created mockup poses using DAZ3D, as well as using Dotflare's 'HD Gabriel' model and Xetirano's 'V1 model' as visual references for drawing some of the details correctly.

I modelled the background by hand in Blender and aligned it with my previously-created DAZ3D poses to get the perspective correct and kinda just...slapped some colors and perspective blur on it and called it a day.

This is about 12 days' worth of work, ish. I can't remember if I worked on it every day or not.

"Not happening, guapo" You inmediately said "This is something for me to show you and your family something about my country. I'll not have your mom, dad or brother to help me out with anything; I can do it"

"You don't have to do it"

"But I want to. Your mom wants to try something traditional from my country and I'll do it, gladly. She has already taught me so much about Las Islas Canarias, that I kinda feel bad because I don't do my country's dishes for you guys"

"They really don't care about it"

"But I do"

"But you shouldn't, hija" Rosy's voice came from behind the two of you "Let me help you"

"Rosy" You whine a little "I really want you guys to enjoy everything"

"I'll enjoy it a lot more if I can help you with a little something"

"Don't do anything and sit pretty, please?" You shyly ask

"Everything but that"

"Fine" You drag out the 'e' "Only with the chicken! But can you put it in the blender? And that's it" She smiled nodding

"I can do that" You smile softly going back to cutting some dressings for the filling when you feel a kiss on your neck and some arms wrap around your middle

"Mi chica terca" (My stubborn girl)

"Calla" (Shut up) You said smiling as he giggled

"Venga Pedri, deja a mi niña tranquila, que haga su trabajo. Esto se ve riquisimo y tengo mucha hambre" (C'mon Pedri, leave my little girl alone, let her do her job. This looks delicious and I'm very hungry)

"Vale, vale" Pedri nodded going to stand besides you "Want me to help you with something?"

"Can you flip the arepas, please?" He nods leaving you and Rosy in the counter while he stood in front of the stove

"They're stuck"

"¡Ay no! Try to peel them off without breaking them"

"Voy, hijo. Que las vas a dañar" (You'll break them)

A few seconds passed and the kitchen fell silent

"Did you do it, Rosy?"

"I'm trying, cariño. But they're stuck"

"No no, coño e' la madre. Voy" (No no, fuck. Coming) You quickly forgot about the filling and washed your hands going over to both González.

You see Rosy handing you the spatula but you don't mind it, with your hand you grab the beggining of an arepa and carefully lifted it off the pan, not caring how hot the pan was but making sure it didn't break. Once you finally lifted it, you flipped it over and did the same with the other four arepas.

"Esto está es listoo" (Done) You smile before going back to the filling

"Hey, I've never seen you do that, preciosa"

"Do what?"

"¿Como carajos has hecho eso?" (How the hell did you do that?)

"What?"

"Pues eso! You flipped an arepa over with your hand! The pan was so hot and you didn't even flinched!" You just looked at him not knowing what to say

"That's called Mom Hands, hijo" Rosy looked at you smiling "I've already told you this but you better not let this girl go. She's a keeper" She side hugs you, kissing your cheek as you blush

"I know she is" He whispers, giving you a kiss "That's why I'm never letting her go"

Gavi:

"Preciosa, the bread is done"

"Perfect! I already have everything cut, the sauce's are done as well. The only thing what's left are the sausages, are they done?" You asked your 10 months boyfriend, you see how he looks over the boiling pan

"I think so"

"Did you opened them in half so they can be cooked better?"

Pablo, falls silent and looks again to the pan "...No"

"Amor! Te pedí que lo hicieras desde el inicio!" (I asked you to do it from the beggining!)

"Perdona, que también me dijiste que hiciera el zumo de limón y se me olvidó lo de los chorizos" (Sorry, you also told me to make the lemon juice and I forgot about the chorizos)

"They still need to cook a little" You pull one out with a fork "I'll open them"

You pulled out the chorizos with the fork and once you let the water drain out of them, you grabbed them with your hand and put them on the chopping board at the same time you grabbed a knife and sliced them in half.

"Hey, hey, hey!"

"What, what, what?"

"It's hot! You're going burn yourself!"

"They're not hot"

"The sausages were in boiling water, of course they're hot and of course you'll get burned!"

"I'm ok, baby" You kiss his cheek as he watches you take out the boiling water and put another pan to fry the sausages "It's not a big deal, I've cooked for a while"

"I know you've and I've seen your mom and grandma do the same, I know this is how you cook but that doesn't mean I'll love watching you put your hand on top of boiling water or in hot oil"

"Eh, que conozco mis límites" (Hey, I know my limits) He laughs

"Don't do it again"

"I'll try not doing that again in front of you" You say leaning to kiss his lips "Do you think it's hot enough?" You ask pulling your hand on top of the pan

You laugh watching his eyes wide open in horror "Y/N, no! Dijiste que no lo harías!" (You said you wouldn't do it!)

Fermín:

"Fermín!" You called for your boyfriend, you waited a few seconds to see him pulling up to the kitchen "Where are the height sticks?"

"In the top left drawer, maybe?"

"Can you please hand me some? Está tortilla me está haciendo la vida imposible" (This tortilla it's making my life impossible) You said both hands occupied

"Why?"

"Es que esta parte de la tortilla se devuelve para este lado, con los palitos de altura se mantiene y como todavía les falta cocción, pues espero que se mantenga y no se rompa" (It is that this part of the tortilla is returned to this side, with the height sticks is maintained and as they still lack cooking, I hope it keeps and does not break.)

It was about 7 pm. slightly windy outside but pretty normal weather.. It was steamy in the small bathroom from the shower running warm water. a small penis drawn in the steam on the mirror. Erik. Erik just finished blow drying his hair, his eyes turning to gaze at his girlfriend who was powdering down her stark white base of foundation.

Erik slipped his black very much washed jeans on and put his hands on her waist, giving her a squeeze before leaning his chin on her shoulder, "You look like a dork." he says, "Glad I'm dating a fuckass ghost." You just glared and pushed him off of you. "Shut up.. its a trust the process kinda thing, you know something you don't know how to do." You barked back.

Erik just clutched his chest and gave an offended look, "Excuse me? my messy hair takes A LOT of time to get right... so fuck off."

You just gave him a look before picking up your eyeshadow brush and started to drag the black from your palette across your eyelid. Erik just stared like a kicked puppy being neglected.

You finished your makeup and looked at him, "You done pouting now...?" Erik sighed dramatically and crossed his arms, "I guess..."

This guy was a brat. You just wanted to smack him. But that's abuse... Don't abuse your Erik's .

You raise your eyebrow noticing how Erik was looking away trying to be nonchalant, batting his eyelashes. "Ookay.. you look like you want something. What." Erik grinned as you finally noticed, "Pretty please make me pretty? Not like you though. You're kinda hard to look at..." He said with a shit eating grin.

And that earned him a smack. Erik was now heartbroken. Well not really. He deserved it.

But soon enough you gave him a small kiss as you apologized. "I'm sorry. Please stop saying you'll call the police for "abuse" now.."

Erik sighed and rolled his eyes. "Fine."

You grabbed a headband and pushed it through Eriks hair, please never go bald Erik... he's kinda scary...

Erik just watched as you lathered his face with white foundation, hitting his face with a beauty blender. "Violent...." You just rolled your eyes, "I can just not do this..?" Erik scoffed and shut up again.

You blended everything and grabbed your eyeliner to start the rough sketch outline... Pretty basic corpse paint design. She grabs her black face paint just to make things go by faster and so she doesn't have to literally dry her eyeliner out....

You hum to some fuckass song stuck in your head and give Erik a little kiss. "Happy?" you asked as you dug your brush into the black paint, the cold texture touching his skin, Tracing the sharp design filling it in.

Erik sticks his tongue out and licks the leftover lipgloss you transferred off his lips. "Very sweetheart." You just roll your eyes and finish taking a small brush and making sure the tips are sharp. you grab your black lipstick and trail it across his lips slightly, making pointy edges. Erik was slipping his bracelets on at the same time. multitasking king.

Erik took the headband off and shook his head, fixing his hair. He looked in the mirror. He can't lie. he fucking loved it.. You smiled proudly, "You look hot... Like it?" Erik nodded and pulled you into him. "So much. I look very sick and my girl looks very hot.." Erik kissed you deeply, his tongue asking for entrance. You pulled away, "Nuhuh. not so fast. We have somewhere to be dork." Erik sighs and dramatically pulled his black tanktop on, grabbing his leather jacket. "Whatever... neglect at its finest...."

You just rolled your eyes and grabbed your jacket, pulling it over your outfit. "Yup.. you sleep in a box outside... I know.."

Erik grabbed your hand, your rings clinking against the ones on his own fingers. "Love you." You smiled and kissed his cheek, leaving a small black print of lipstick.

"Love you too." You grinned.

"I still call abuse..."

Sims 4 Render Lighting Tutorial

"Environmental Lighting" won my most recent poll, so let's get right into it!

A few notes before we begin:

I render exclusively in cycles!

This tutorial assumes some basic knowledge of blender

Though this tutorial covers the basics, HDRIs can be used in conjunction with any scene/your built scenes

I decided to focus on environmental and other lighting in this tutorial, since they all kind of go hand in hand.

For this tutorial, I'll be using my recent Cupid Sim. Here's a render of her with no additional lighting:

1. Base lighting

In any full body, single sim render (like lookbooks, for example), I really like to use a glowing base. It grounds the sim a bit and casts some interesting lighting on them.

To do this, I add a circle under their feet by pressing shift+A and selecting circle.

An empty circle will appear, but we need it to be a solid disk, so go into Edit mode (by pressing tab while the circle is selected) then hitting F on the keyboard to fill it.

After that, you can go into the Materials tab and add in color and glow.

Mine is adjusted like this:

2. HDRIs

HDRIs (High Dynamic Range images) are extremely useful when it comes to environmental lighting, I always use them now to add better/more dynamic lighting to my renders.

HDRIs are 3D/panoramic, which makes them extremely useful.

You can find/download HDRIs online in a few diff places: PolyHaven, AmbientCO, and Blender Market.

There are also several available for FREE using BlenderKit (my preferred method).

So how do you use an HDRI?

We can add HDRIs to our render by navigating to the world tab and changing the color to "environment texture".

I chose this vaporware HDRI from BlenderKit, & here it is with no adjustments, but it's looking a little rough so let's adjust it.

By adding vector nodes, we can adjust how the HDRI behaves. Here I mostly use the Z rotation and the background strength:

Here's the same render with the Z-rotation set to 50, 150, 200, & 250.

You can put in any value for the Z-rotation, this is just an example of how the HDRI turns. This is maybe not the best example of the rotation, but putting her in a forest just didn't feel right lmfaooo, hopefully you can see how the light changes on her depending on the rotation.

You can also adjust the strength of the HDRI. Here's the HDRI (rotated to 150) set at .5 and 1.5 strength:

For this tutorial, my favorite lighting is the HDRI set to 150, and the strength set to .5, like this (this is a rendered image):

3. Transparent HDRIs + Point Lights

But I'm not fully happy with the lighting. I don't love how the HDRI is a bit blurry, so I'm going to set it to be transparent.

To do this, go to the Render Tab, scroll down to the Film option, and check Transparent:

The lighting effect from the HDRI will stay the same, but the background will be transparent.

From here, you can add a background (when I do this, I like adding a plane, & moving/shading it until I'm happy (kinda like this):

NOTE that you have to put the plane far enough behind your sim so it doesn't affect the HDRI lighting too much.

SECOND NOTE You can use this same method to use HDRIs in conjunction with scenes. They can provide the perfect backdrop!

This is still really dark, so I'm going to add three point lights: -Two on either side of her head/shoulders that will be smaller (in radius) and brighter -One in front of her to add actual light (so details aren't lost)

Here's how I set up my lights.

The pink light settings are for the two point lights on the sides The white light setting is for the light in front of her

For a basic render, this is almost good enough for me, but I really like the glowing effect I get in my renders.

To achieve this, we have to go to the compositing tab:

4. Compositing

Full disclosure, my compositing tab is set to glow by default (that's how much I love it), so all of the renders in this tutorial have it turned on.

I use the glare node and set it to fog glow.

Here's my preferred setting:

I prefer the fog glow effect, but bloom, ghost, streaks and star are also options.

Tbh, I never use any of the other settings, so I'll leave this tutorial here for today.

Taking the 4t2 concept too far. Yup, that's the Sims 4 face converted to The Sims 2, in all its blurry glory. Well, just a quick and really messy conversion, to be more precise.

Yet another Sims 2 face experiment I tried. Full disclaimer: nope, I will not finish this project. This was just a fun one day experiment I tried, because why not.

I made a ton of mistakes in this process, will definitely learn from that. Speaking of which, did you know you can make Shape Keys (Sims morphs) from rigged meshes in Blender? That's in fact the excuse I took to practice and learn in this little project. Sims 4 faces are rigged with joints, contrary to the Sims 2 faces which are animated with morphs. It was actually way easier than I anticipated.

The reason it looks so blurry is because I figured if (and a big if right here) this project was worth working on, maybe keeping the UV map mostly intact would help when transferring textures from TS4 to TS2. That's why it looks so pixelated. It's the original UV face map squished to fit into the TS2 mapping. I have to say, as uncanny as it looks and, even with the limited amount of morphs I made, I... kinda like it? But yeah honestly this is not worth it at all. It would require replacing all base face meshes, default replace all the Eaxis face templates, remake all the face sliders for these new meshes… All of that, but also for every single age and gender. Basically replace the whole Sims 2 face system! And then you would realize skins, makeup, eyebrows, and any face overlay would need to be adapted as well. So uh… that ain't happening, no thanks. If anything, it'd be better taking the original Sims 2 faces and making a couple changes here and there to improve their geometry. Better eyes, noses, ears, mouth, remove the original eyelashes and make them as optional accessories… As much as I love the iconic low poly Sims 2 faces, I still think there's quite a lot of room for improvement.

Is paper made at home with the blender method really always low quality? I've been wanting to learn to do it for ages and planned on doing so once I had enough space, it seemed like a craft with a relatively low bar of entry that I could do despite my disabilities and a good way to recycle all the junk mail I get, but if it's doomed to be low quality and fall apart it kinda sounds pointless to learn? I mean I never intended to do anything in particular with the paper, the process itself is what made my brain get all "oh I wanna do that", but if I won't even be able to use it to draw or write or give it to someone who can use it for that...idk. Are there ways to modify the shredded paper to pulp method so the paper has a better chance of being useful? Or is that also essentially impossible without a huge expensive machine?

(Also no worries if you don't have the spoons to answer, I always planned on doing my own research before starting and am still going to do that at some point regardless if I decide to actually try or not.)

Quick answer (might investigate more later if the curse lets me): it's going to depend partially on what you use as your base paper and what you're planning to use it for. My background is bookbinding and conservation, where papers need to meet pretty specific quality requirements bc they're used in ways that put them under strain (folding, glueing, being folded and frequently handled, often being the failure point of a binding or repair). Paper that's being used to draw with dry media or as an art object won't be subjected to that kind of stress, so it doesn't matter as much if it's fragile. Things to consider:

Thin sheets of paper will exacerbate the problems; a really thin sheet of blender-made paper might just not be usable, but if you pull chunkier sheets they'll hold up better

Using better-quality paper to begin with will get you a better-quality product. If you have any offcuts of watercolor or printmaking paper or good sketchbook paper, it will work best. Since you mentioned using up junk mail, know that it's probably going to make especially weak paper, though if you use a mixture of papers you can offset that somewhat. If you care about longevity, stay away from newsprint because it's acidic.

Even weak paper usually won't fall apart from basic handling, but it could be very brittle (cracking if you fold it) and not have much abrasion resistance (ripping up if you try to erase pencil lines), so bear that in mind when you're deciding what to do with it. It's also likely to be very fragile when wet.

You can draw or write with dry media on almost any paper, but if you want to use ink you might want to look into sizing. Even good-quality handmade paper is very absorbent and usually needs to be treated with a sizing agent to keep the ink from feathering out. The most common is gelatin, but I'm sure there are others.

The surface might also be very rough, making a pen/brush skip around. Paper can be burnished, which is done industrially with hot rollers and you can do yourself with a bone folder. It's pretty labor-intensive though

You can take advantage of the thickness and texture by making art paper—add tea or dried plants or glitter or little scraps of unpulped paper to your vat! Then the use of the paper is Being Cool so you don't have to worry about what else you can do with it

Also look into pulp painting! It's a technique where you actually *want* overprocessed fiber because you can use it to paint or stencil designs on other pieces of paper that have been couched and pressed but not dried yet. It was one of my favorite techniques to play around with when I was doing papermaking!

TLDR: You can't make really high-quality paper with the blender method, but you can definitely make usable stuff as long as you keep the strengths and limitations of the technique in mind!

I've also decided that he smells like basement and gasoline because he lives in a basement and sleeps on the couch down there which also smells like gasoline bc he got it as a hand-me-down bc it used to sit unused in someone's garage. I wanna make it so in my au his life is bleak as fuck in an ironic but also kinda sad way😭 he's treated just as poorly as the survivors bc the specre doesn't give two fucks if anyone is happy, basically, kind of like the government in a way.

Maybe part of why he hates everyone is also because he's miserable. Most of my art of this game will probably stupid and comedic, I do plan to make comics at some point, but the au itself is about as dark as canon. I've been trying to make less depressing stories lately. Idk. Apparently canonically 1x likes to eat dried limes and that just adds something so human to him, like that makes me so sad for some reason he's just a little guy. I wanna draw him snacking on some limes while curled up in a blanket by the window as it rains outside like hfggrgdgd he's just a little guy I don't care if he's murderous I love him anyway. The stupid angry bastard I need to put him in a blender I love him so much

I have mixed feelings about David Hogg being one of the DNC Vice Chairs.

Like, I get that he probably appeals to the Democratic base and establishment because he's a fairly photogenic young man who's been a gun control activist since filming the reaction to the Parkland shooting. It probably also feels like poking the eyes of right-wing douchebags who called him a "crisis actor." But also it kinda reflects the Democrats' inability to stop sticking forks in electrical sockets.

Honestly one of the weirdest things about centrist Democrats is "I will throw any minority under the bus to be non-threatening to Republicans, but I will vote for all the gun control you've got." This has never worked. There are just as many uncommitted centrists who love shooting guns as there are ones that believe in more gun control. I don't think they realize how vanishingly small their overall target demographic of "reasonable suburban Republicans who don't like guns" really is.

Take Beto O'Rourke, for example. This guy was the DNC Chosen One, the Man Who Would Make Texas a Swing State. O'Rourke has since spent $200 million in four years without winning any elections, because he thinks saying "fuck" and "hell" makes him sound cool as he sticks his dick in the blender that is proposing gun control in Texas. $200 million that could've been spent on any number of local Texan elections that would've actually been really helped bring change to Texas, burnt at the altar of "cool guys say 'fuck,' right?"

I find the Democratic need to tilt at the gun control windmill to be especially foolish in a time when, generally speaking, the fascists seizing power are backed by the part of the population that has the most guns. And personally, I find it obnoxious as Washington state's Democrat-led government is busy inventing new forms of gun control to throw at us, as if the 2023 assault weapons ban wasn't onerous enough.

On the other hand, David Hogg seems to have shaken things up and clashed with DNC leadership re: primarying useless old bastards with younger, progressive candidates. So I dunno. Maybe it's fine, but good Lord I wish the Dems would just fuck off when it comes to guns.
